Martha’s family asked us to design a celebration that captured the full scope of a life well lived, and for Martha, that life revolved around family. And tennis. Family and tennis.  Martha and her husband Todd spent decades chasing Grand Slams together, and we wove that love story throughout the day: Martha’s own tennis racquet wrapped in her favorite blooms, tennis ball cake pops paired with a hand-drawn caricature of the couple mid-rally, and a plaque tracing their matches from Wimbledon to the Australian Open. Martha’s tribute was memorialized with a performance by her favorite recording artist, Michael Franti, who played an intimate set for guests singing her most treasured songs. Photo walls filled the home inside and out, while smaller frames sat tucked into every lounge vignette so guests were never far from a memory of her. Gigi’s Doll House, a 1989 Christmas gift Martha gave her daughters, was set out for her grandchildren to play with just as she once watched her own kids play. Guests built Martha’s Garden stone by stone, writing memories and messages to leave behind on rocks that would adorn the garden in her memory, and took home seed paper hearts to plant in her honor. This is what it looks like when a celebration of life actually feels like the person being celebrated.
